Effective April 21, 2015, Google is updating it’s search algorithm to rank mobile optimized websites higher then non-mobile friendly websites
Back in February, Google warned us that they planned to introduce mobile-friendliness as a factor to their search ranking algorithm. As more and more users are viewing websites on-the-go via mobile devices, such as phones and tablets, it is understandable why Google would want mobile-optimized sites to display first. These changes are set to go live on April 21, 2015 and they could (or could not) have a deleterious impact to your site’s organic search ranking. Now is a good time to review your site and ensure that it is mobile-optimized and responsive not only to stay at the top of search results but also to ensure that your site visitors are able to easily access the content they are looking for.
What is Mobile-Optimization / Responsive Design?
Mobile-optimization and responsive design ensures that your website’s content is accessible and easy to read on devices other than a traditional computer. It usually includes touch-friendly navigational elements allowing visitors to easily move around your site on touch screen devices. Site content and images are also responsive to the screen size they are being viewed on, for example, scaling and collapsing to a one column format for a user viewing on a mobile phone.
How can I test my existing site to see if it is mobile responsive?
Google has provided a very easy to use tool to allow you to test your site and see if it is mobile friendly. This tool can be accessed by clicking here and all you need to do is enter the website URL.
My website is not mobile friendly. What can I do?
Well you are basically going to have to rebuild the site template/design using a responsive framework and/or techniques. Sometimes, depending on how old your site is and what platform it is currently on, it may make more sense to start from scratch.
